Find out what really is in a wine label

Posted by on 4:08 pm in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Find out what really is in a wine label

You may remember the old adage ‘you can’t judge a book by its cover’, but is the same true about a bottle of wine?  Can you judge wine by its label?

What Do The Labels Mean?

There is a lot of information in the label of a bottle of wine, and if you aren’t a connoisseur of wine it can be a little overwhelming at first glance.  The majority of wine labels are quite similar though, containing information on the winery where the wine was made, the ‘appellation’ (the country or region where the grapes that went into the wine were grown), the variety (the type of grapes the wine was made from) and the vintage (the year when the grapes were harvested).  The strength  / alcohol content of the wine is also displayed on the label.

Some extra information may appear depending on the country in which the wine was bottled.  As an example, wines bottled in the USA are required to have the name and address of the bottler displayed on the label, along with certain consumer warnings.   There are also sometimes some details on the ripeness of the grapes, and information about the winery that produced the wine.

What Else Appears on Wine Labels?

What once was just used to mark what was in the bottle, wine labels have become a spot to showcase artwork and make for a unique collection for a wine lover. While they may seem like an odd collection, the artwork on wine labels can be extremely beautiful, and a label may remind you of a special trip or an important event where you enjoyed the wine. And wine labels are certainly easier to save and display than empty bottles! Collecting wine labels has become so popular that manufacturers have even developed special cases to display them, and wine labels actually have their own category on eBay! Avid collectors often have their own websites or blogs devoted to sharing their collection with others.

Can I Customize a Label For A Special Occasion?

If you are planning a special celebration ñ perhaps a wedding, anniversary celebration, or even just a really fancy company party, then you could take advantage of companies that allow you to turn a piece of your own artwork into a wine label. You could put pretty much anything you wanted on the label ñ a photograph of the couple getting married, your company logo, or some other design of significance to the recipient.  After the wine has been drank, it is likely the bottle will remain displayed in pride of place for a long time to come!

Wine is something we are ofte introduced to in our teenage years by our parents at family get togethers. Occasionally we may sneak a bottle or two to share with friends even though it is often frowned upon or even illegal depending on the country you live in. In Europe the traditions enjoyed see children introduced to wine at a very early age. This is to start to buiuld their appreciation of wine and to remove the mystery of alcohol which in turn often means that when the child grows uop they don’t have a dependancy on alcohol.

Your taste buds will change as you age though and in turn your appreciation of wines will also alter. The tyopical cycle of taste bud change begins when you are in your late teenage years from around 16 and tyopically move to the next level around 23. It is in these years that the majority of people like sweeter drinks. The rise in alcopops and sweeter wine sales to this demographic shows this is true.

From the age of 23 to 30 people will move onto dryer wines and mostly whites and rose wines. This is where your palate is developing and you are coming into contact with people of other ages and tastes. The females will typically drink rose wine and whites and the males mostly whites but some are starting to try reds and build in the style of red that they like from lighter reds like Burgundy and Beaujolais to more tannic reds like Malbec and Shiraz.

Once people hit 30 they are now trying reds and heavier white wines. Their palates are developed enough to want to experiment and they now enjoy curries and other dishes that they would not have touched in their early teen years.

As the taste buds seem to transition every 7 years it’s at the pojnt of 37-40 that people now know what sort of wine they like. The have tried everything and have settled into their style. The lure of new experiences kicks in again in the 40’s and people embark on a new journey of discovery in the world of wine.

Beginners guide to wine tasting

Wine really does deserve some serious attention these days. It’s miore than just a drink and deserves to be revered rather than consumed. The issue is that many people don’t give wine the respect it deserves and so they miss the magic that some of the experts adore. One of the main issues is that no one actually teaches people in the UK how to appreciate wine and the subtle nuances that can be found.

It is common that the majority of wine tasters follow their own set out plan when tasting and this will vary from person to person. Most of these steps, whilst having their place in the vineyards would be frowned upon at the dining table, they involve a set of steps which to the layperson would appear quite ridiculous.

The wine snob factor also comes into play with normal people and the thought of being labelled a wine bore fills most people with dread.

The difference can be akin to that of a persons preference to a particular style or genre of music. The world of critical wine tasting is a comparison between a real standard and the wine in question, drinking wine with a meal is greatly different to this and the wine is undoubtedly intended as an accompaniment to the meal and as a refreshment. Although there is no doubting the eccentric activities of a wine taster at a dinner party are perhaps not required it is worth admiring and appreciating the great talent and concentration that goes into the true appreciation of wine.

From an outsiders view, these strange and sometimes occult like tastings may seem a little over complicated but with a true desire and ability to focus ones attention it is quickly possible to begin to understand and appreciate wine in a more full sense.

Where possible it is advised that you should rinse your mouth clean before tasting a wine, but obviously in a dinner party setting this is not always possible nor desired. I would however, recommend that the beginner use this method, it clears the palette and allows the wine taster to become more familiar with the basic characteristics of the wine being tasted (if in doubt, borrow from the experts!).

A more experienced taster will more quickly be able to get the basic qualities of a wine and will often omit this step. Many consider that rinsing with water in this way detracts from the wine and affects palette because the water alters the sensitivity of the tongue and therefore adds a further complication in the whole process. During a long session of tasting it is quite possible that the mouth can become fatigued and therefore this instance lends itself to a revitalization with water. The consumption of basic water biscuits can also be of great assistance in cleansing the palate.

Wines are best tasted in tulip shaped glasses, with the exception being sparkling wines which require a fluted glass (the elongated type you often see unused in display cabinets!). These style of glasses enhance the sparkling wines natural effervescence. If you don’t have the correct glasses (or enough if you’re having friends round) you can always loan them from a friend.

It is important when comparing wines that each glass is filled to the same level (about a third full is the normal) this allows the taster to hold the glass at a steep angle to allow for a nice observation of the colour and clarity but also allows for a nice vigorous swirl of the wine which in turn releases the aromatics in the wine. At dinner party’s it’s also a useful tool when showing off, but beware there is always someone at the party who knows more about wine than you, so credit your fellow guests with some intelligence!

Whatever you do try to enjoy wine and learn a little bit more with each wine you taste. Try to recall what each varietal tastes like and experience the differences between different countries and record your thoughts. Remember in wine there is no right or wrong answer as it’s all subjective.
